Our History

From the inception of Cahaya Bangsa Classical School, the founders have endeavored to create a school that would truly be “a light to the nations” (Isaiah 49:6). Parents in the city of Bandung wanted to take seriously God’s commandment to

“Raise your children in the training and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4) by providing an education presented from a Biblical worldview.We desired to take seriously our Biblical mandate of becoming a blessing to the nation (Genesis 12:2-3) and to set up a school that could serve as a model for Indonesia’s struggling education system, in that way, truly becoming a “light” to the nation. We believe that parents have the ultimate and major responsibility of training their children, not schools, and therefore we believe our role is to partner with families to help train, instruct, disciple, and encourage their children so that they will become mature adults who love God, who posses a heart oriented toward serving others, and who exemplify above all other virtues, integrity, holiness, and courage to do what is right.

The mission of Cahaya Bangsa Classical School is to provide a Christ-centered educational environment which inspires a love for learning in the students and equips them with a Biblical worldview through which they will think wisely and act purposefully in impacting their nation for the glory of God.

Kurikulum

What is Classical Education?

Classical education is a systematic, orderly method of education that has been proven throughout the centuries. Classical education has its roots in ancient Greece and Rome, was developed in the Middle Ages, and was in use through the founding and early years of the United States of America.

This method has produced many world leaders and great minds whose ideas have influenced culture and society. It has developed mature leaders with a solid foundation of knowledge, the ability to think logically and systematically, and the tools to clearly articulate their conclusions. How does classical education work? Classical education uses the Trivium, which is an educational approach consisting of three stages: the Grammar Stage, the Logic Stage and the Rhetoric Stage. These three stages parallel the "knowledge, understanding, and wisdom" found in Proverbs 2:6. Through these three stages students can learn thoroughly and systematically. Each stage is built upon the foundation laid in the previous stage. Each stage is designed to parallel the student's psychological development and to take advantage of the student's natural tendencies at that stage.

Grammar Stage (Knowledge)
The first stage of the Trivium is the grammar stage. Children in the grammar stage range from about preschool age through fifth or sixth grade. The strengths of these children tend toward enjoying memory work and learning new concepts. Children in this age group are naturally curious about the world around them. Only once will they be able to learn or discover something for the first time. It is very important for us to preserve this curiosity and not allow it to be quenched at this stage. Young children also easily memorize facts and words and enjoy repeating rhymes, songs, and stories. Early childhood is the optimal time for children to learn a foreign language.

Therefore in the grammar stage, the amassing of knowledge and facts is emphasized. Efforts are made so that children can absorb new information and develop a wide awareness and understanding of the world around them. A portion of class time is devoted to memorizing important facts through poetry, songs, rhyme, and repetition. The goal of the grammar stage is to acquire facts which make up the building blocks of each subject and to provide a solid foundation of knowledge in each subject.

Logic Stage (Understanding)
As students begin to reach the middle school years, they no longer enjoy memory work and repeating rhymes or songs over and over again. These students are developing analytical reasoning skills and are able to process information and draw conclusions. At this stage the teaching style shifts to accommodate the students' new strengths.

These students like to ask "Why?" Unlike the grammar stage students, they do not automatically accept everything they are taught. They tend to imagine the most extreme case and challenge what is taught. Although these tendencies may appear negative, they can be channeled to constructive activities if the students direct their challenges and questions toward the school lessons instead of toward authority.

During this stage the student learns from the mistakes and failures, as well as from the strengths and victories of historical figures. They learn that historical events are not isolated and separate from each other, but that they are inter-related and influence and affect other events.

During the logic stage the students are taught to think logically and wisely, to order ideas and facts, to understand the relationship between facts and events, and to analyze and make conclusions. Timelines, charts and maps, debates, and persuasive reports help reinforce critical thinking. Formal logic is also studied and applied to other subjects during this stage.

Rhetoric Stage
When students reach high school, they begin to enter the rhetoric stage. At this age the students have a great desire to express themselves. By this age, they have developed the ability to think maturely, possessing a wide perspective and the ability to think, analyze, and make logical conclusions. In the rhetoric stage students are able to articulate and clearly express their convictions and ideas gracefully and articulately.

These students are idealistic, concerned with justice, and able to assume responsibility. With their teachers and classmates, they analyze and discuss various worldviews. Because they begin to develop specialized interests, they are provided the opportunity for individual research according to their inclinations and abilities.
In conclusion, classical education is a systematic, orderly system of education which provides children with order and routine. In the classical approach, students consistently learn little by little, day by day. The emphasis is on subject mastery, not merely on passing to the next level. Classical education is language-centered, not image-centered, because the mastery of basic language skills (reading and writing) facilitates the study of every other subject. Subjects are not taught in isolation, but are integrated, and efforts are made to recognize the relationship between different fields of study.

Again, the Trivium consists of three stages:
1. Grammar stage: giving information
2. Logic stage: teaching the ability to order facts and information that has already been studied
3. Rhetoric stage: equipping the student with the ability to express the conclusions he has made.

Through these three stages, classical education endeavors to build in each child an enthusiasm for learning that will encourage lifetime learning. We desire to see each child reach his maximal potential and to be equipped and prepared to face the future.

Program & Prestasi

Pre School

Early Childhood education provides the strong foundation necessary for the spiritual, academic, and social development of each child. They will learn how to adjust to a school environment, where they will be taught and trained to be able to help themselves. Teachers help students to build relationships with others using Biblical principles.

Our nurturing school environment develops a love of learning and allows each child to experience God’s love as they express themselves academically, emotionally, and spiritually. Our program is developmentally appropriate and intellectually engaging for children.

The subjects that students learn about are Bible, pre-reading, and math. Students also have the opportunity to explore their interests in Music, Art, and PE classes.

Grammar stage is the foundation for children in preparing them to continue to study in the stage of Logic and Rhetoric. Our programs focus in preparing the students academically as well as socially and spiritually. Students learn and comprehend new knowledge, concepts, and applications in their daily life. Basic facts and memorization are emphasized in this stage because they are needed for overall comprehension, discussions, questions, presentations, and projects in order to train them to think critically. Parents and teachers work together to nurture students in their development in study habits, character, and spiritual.

Upper School

When our children graduate from the sixth grade, they are welcomed into a very different learning environment as they enter into the CBCS Upper School. They will move, as parallel classes, from one subject to another and learn with different teachers in each one. From homework assignments and projects, to lunches and P.E., it reflects a growing independence and ability in your child that we recognize and help to develop. Classes in the Upper school are rigorous and are designed to stretch young minds and develop their critical thinking skills that promote active participation in the classroom.

Spending over thirty hours each week together with our students, our Upper School faculty participates actively in their spiritual development. Each teacher is a committed, maturing Christian who reflects a passion for education and a love for their students. Students in the Upperschool enjoy an additional ‘Wise Time’ period where they may meet with teachers for extra tutoring, receive counsel, have prayer, or share a snack. In addition to instructional hours, CBCS offers ample opportunities for students to grow as they participate in extracurricular activities and clubs, including: basketball, futsal, computer, drama, yearbook, and marketing. Bible study cell groups are developing and meet regularly to strengthen and encourage our student body in addition to our weekly scheduled Chapels.

The Academic program and curriculum.
All subjects are taught as part of a unified, integrated whole that demonstrates God’s character and glory as revealed through His Word and creation. Our curriculum has been carefully crafted to take our students from their first exposure to logic (and learning how to recognize a fallacy) to their magnum opus of writing, presenting, and defending a Senior Thesis. Needless to say, a lot of learning and growth goes on in between as they study in the English language within the different disciplines of the Arts and Sciences: Bible, history, science, language arts, logic, rhetoric, debate, math, music, and fine arts. The consistent study of the Indonesian culture, language, and literature help fulfill the vision of the school—in building and impacting the nation through the Christian worldview as we build Indonesian leaders for the future.
