Learning programmes
Our programmes use an active and hands-on approach, where creativity and inquiry lead our young students to explore their world through focussed learning experiences. Activities are developmentally appropriate and students are encouraged to ask questions and explore their world. The thematic integrated curriculum includes writing, science, social studies, art/craft, music and movement and PE.
Language
The Early Years Programme uses a holistic approach that encourages the rich development of language for young learners in both Indonesian and English.
Playgroup (PG)
Playgroup introduces the students to the early skills of language, literacy and number through thematic activities integrated with a rich, hands-on programme of music, PE and art/craft activities. It is taught by a bilingual teacher and two assistants in small groups.
Kindergarten 1 (TK A)
The programme is taught by two Early Childhood bilingual teachers, with one teacher delivering the content in Indonesian, and the other teacher in English. Students are therefore given consolidated periods of time in both languages. We use the engaging Jolly Phonics programme to help our students develop early reading skills in both languages. Students also develop comprehension skills through listening, discussing and reading stories in English and Indonesian. and through this our students develop early reading skills in both languages. Students also develop comprehension skills through listening, discussing, and reading stories in English and Indonesian.
Kindergarten 2 (TK B)
The Cambridge International Primary Programme begins in Kindergarten 2 (TK B) and Class 1 with a framework for the English language outcomes and in Mathematics where it melds with the National Curriculum outcomes. Our highly qualified international teacher and bilingual Indonesian teacher deliver this programme with a ratio of fifty/fifty Indonesian/English in the academic content of language, mathematics, science and social studies.
Primary School
The Primary School covers Classes 1 to 6, and has a dual language programme of Indonesian and English. This dual language approach means that our Primary school children have the opportunity to gain proficiency in both Indonesian and English in listening, speaking, reading and writing in all areas of the academic curriculum. Students are encouraged to develop their critical thinking and creative skills through inquiry based learning in all areas of the curriculum.
The Indonesian National Curriculum is used throughout the Primary School, and is melded with the Cambridge International Primary programme learning outcomes in English, Mathematics and Science. It is an outcomes-based programme, student and activity oriented, and teaching strategies incorporate international teaching methods and best practice. ESL (English as a Second Language) and ISL (Indonesian as a Second Language) assistance is offered to those students who need help in either language.
Physical Education, Art and Music are taught to all primary school students. Appreciation of the Balinese culture is also taught at all levels and students are introduced to the Balinese language and script. A deep appreciation of the need to take care of our environment is also incorporated into many aspects of the curriculum. Primary classes have at least one field trip each term, which connects to their learning.
Our programme is strengthened by the Cambridge Primary Programme (CPP) from the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). It develops English, Mathematics and Science skills in young children across the world and provides a natural progression through the stages of primary education by focussing on what children should be able to do at each of the primary stages.
The Cambridge Primary Programme also provides guidance for the primary classroom teachers and is designed to help both teachers and parents gain a greater understanding of their children’s abilities, and their strengths and weaknesses. This is very important, as it helps teachers to know which areas to focus on for each child.
The Cambridge Primary Programme is an excellent framework for learning in the primary years and provides a solid foundation for progression to secondary education, including the Cambridge Secondary 1 Programme and Cambridge IGCSE courses. These courses are used in the upper primary (class 6) and the high school at Dyatmika. For more details about the Cambridge Secondary 1 programme in class 6 please see the high school section.
High School
In order to serve the students of our community, the High School offers both theUniversity of Cambridge International Curriculum and Exams and the National Curriculum and Exams. In the lower high school (SMP) these are studied concurrently and in the upper high school (SMA) students study the Cambridge curriculum in class 9 and 10 (IGCSE’s) and can then choose to study the accelerated National curriculum or the advanced level Cambridge curriculum in classes 11 and 12.
In addition to these two curricula, Dyatmika offers a rich programme during the school day and also after school in the following areas: various Sports, the Arts, community service, field trips locally and further afield, adventure camps (outdoor education) and activities connected to the environment. The school feels strongly thatsupporting and challenging the social and moral aspects of growing up are as important as a solid academic programme. Taking responsibility is a key quality of a Dyatmika education and underpins much of the student’s learning and interaction between students and students and staff.
The students in the high school have the good fortune to be exposed to experienced international and national teachers who are not only passionate about their subject area, but who are keen to promote a happy and healthy school community.
