Greensville Montessori

The Greensville Montessori curriculum is designed to respond to the child's mental appetite, providing the freedom to choose and emphasize creativity, imagination and active involvement in learning. For this to occur, children must acquire the necessary basic skills, as these are the tools essential to continued development. The teacher functions as a facilitator and consultant. They create activities and situations that will help stimulate the children’s interest and curiosity within a prepared environment.

These manipulative materials help the child to become aware of abstractions and refine the senses. These enhance the children’s skills with regards to with color, shapes, sounds, and length, width, height, and texture, visual, auditory, gustatory and olfactory needs of the child. Each activity isolates the one quality that the child is becoming aware of, which in turn eliminates confusions.

Language begins with pre-reading skills which lead to more advanced work including vocabulary development, phonics, structural analysis, and the mechanics of writing with an emphasis on reading for pleasure and writing as a form of personal expression. As time goes on the child may burst into writing when he realizes he can write the words he knows. Many other materials help the child in preparation for writing.

The child learns the numbers from 1-10 concretely, using counting rods and sandpaper numbers. Since children learn better using concrete materials, Maria Montessori designed all math materials in this fashion. After the child has learned their numbers to ten, other materials are introduced to learn the teens and tens. From these children learn the decimal system, eventually learning all 4 operations.

The children's natural curiosity is stimulated through discovery projects and experiments. Children will then learn how to love and take care of the environment. Plants and animals are studied to foster a love and appreciation for living things in our schools natural garden habitat.

In the classroom are large wooden puzzle maps of countries and continents. They are used as puzzles and gradually children learn the names of the countries. They also learn the names of the land and water formations, as well as the bodies of water. Geography studies are integrated with botany, zoology, earth science, ecology and social studies.
