Primary School

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an international curriculum framework designed for all children between the ages of 4 and 12 years (Kindergarten to Year 6). The PYP focuses on student learning, using a concept based inquiry approach. Students continually reflect on their learning in relation to what is happening inside and outside the classroom. Their learning is linked to the issues and experiences that happen in the world around them. Inquiry is the engine of individual growth (academic, social, physical, emotional and spiritual) and internationalism.

The curriculum focuses on five essential key elements to develop student learning. These are described as knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes and actions. All areas of learning can be integrated into a unit of inquiry in Science, English, Arts, Mathematics and Social Studies. However not all are taught only through a unit of inquiry. 

The curriculum is organized so that the Units of Inquiry and The Central Ideas engage and challenge all students. After completion of a unit, students are able to demonstrate how they have progressed in the essential elements describe above.

Through the global comprehensive and balanced curriculum, the PYP aims to assist students relate their talents, skills and conceptual understanding from the classroom context to the realities of the outside world.

Assessment
Teachers are responsible for the on-going assessment of students’ work. International and national benchmarks are used by Global Jaya International School to ensure the school is meeting acceptable standards in all areas of learning. The IBO does not impose any formal external moderation or external examination of student work throughout the PYP. The assessment does not only happen at the end of the learning process but is directly linked to the daily learning activities. Students also reflect and evaluate their own and others’ work. Assessment includes student led conferences, writing samples, structured observations, performance tasks and tests.

The students are involved in developing the criteria assessment with the teacher. As a result, they understand exactly on what they will be assessed and how they will be assessed. This helps students to understand and to be aware of the important aspects of their learning and to become independent learners.

In the final year of the programme, students are expected to participate in a culminating project, the PYP Exhibition. This is designed to demonstrate their competences in all areas of the programme.
